(...) I find it somewhat surprising to find myself a care-taker of the watchtower. I use the term ‘care-taker’ loosely in relation to myself because I want to be careful not to claim an ownership or possession of the space, or even an insinuation that I am a good care-taker. Yet when I think about this building that I have grown to know in the last few years, and I think about the various human bodies that come into contact with it, I can only really propose that (with any regularity and endurance) it is the three of us who currently take care for this place, in the constellation of The Watch. There is a sense of being accidental care-takers, revealed to have this unexpected status almost as a default — to realise you are holding something and then to notice that the needs of this thing have grown, or become more transparent, or more urgent, and also that no other hands are doing this holding. (...)
Is it (ever going to be) possible to re-claim this place? Can the gaps of neglect and indifference on the part of the city be activated, so that we can use the inattention to propose our own ways to participate in or at this site? And then what does taking care mean — of the tower, of our own bodies, of the organising structures that coalesce as we come together in this space? (...)

The Watch is a group of artists, cultural producers and researchers who inhabits one of the last remaining former GDR watchtowers in Berlin on Schlesischer Busch (Berlin-Treptow on the edge of Berlin-Kreuzberg) during the summer months in the formats of residencies, semi-public events, screenings and talks.
The former GDR border surveillance-tower has a long tradition of cultural and artistic production since German reunification. In recent years, the watchtower has served as a place for reflection rather than mere production: artists, writers, choreographers, and other thinkers have been invited to spend time within and around the watchtower to consider the tower’s texture, its particular architecture, its history, its future, as well as its present position within Berlin’s cultural and political landscape.
For every two-year cycle, The Watch works with one thematic topic.
For the 2020 and 2021 cycle The Watch is interested in initiating dialogues with the invited residents of the watchtower on the notions and practices of "caretaking". Questions of taking care and what exactly to care about are present in nearly every decision we have to make as The Watch — especially due to our situation hosting an artist residency in a protected monument on a very low budget.
These reflections and dialogues may be based directly on the experience of the artist/researcher/producer spending time in this unique historical structure and having to find a way of dealing with both their own needs as well as the needs of the building. We are also equally interested in approaches that go beyond the actual situation of the watchtower, and that connect in a more conceptual level, using the tower as a site of reflection and/or as a studio space.
In 2021 The Watch is offering three (3) residencies of six (6) week at the listed watchtower. We are looking for individuals or small collectives who are interested in responding to this cycle’s themes during residency periods scheduled between late April and early October 2021.

Der frühere Wachturm blickt auf eine lange Tradition als Ort kultureller und künstlerischer Produktion seit der Wiedervereinigung zurück. Das englische care-taking verbindet diese verschiedenen Bedeutungsebenen in einem Begriff. Fragen des “Sorge tragens” (taking care) und worum sich zu kümmern wäre (to care about) sind permanent präsent im Rahmen der Organisation einer Artist Residency in einem denkmalgeschützen Gebäude mit minimalem Budget.
Welche künstlerischen Formen und Umgangsweisen könnten die Erfahrung und den Aufenthalt an diesem einzigartigen Ort reflektieren und verarbeiten? Wie können die eingeladenen Künstler*innen es schaffen, sowohl ihren eigenen Interessen und Bedürfnissen als auch den Bedürfnissen des Gebäudes gerecht zu werden? Gleichermaßen interessieren uns Zugänge, die sich über die konkrete Situation des Grenzwachturms hinaus dem Thema des “care-taking” auf einer konzeptionellen Ebene widmen und dafür den Wachturm als Denkort und Atelier verwenden möchten.
Für die Zeit von Ende April bis Anfang Oktober 2021 schreibt The Watch drei jeweils sechswöchige Residencies im Grenzwachturm aus. Wir sind auf der Suche nach Einzelpersonen oder Kollektiven, die daran interessiert sind auf unseren thematischen Schwerpunkt innerhalb ihres Aufenthalts im Wachturm einzugehen.

Terms and Conditions:
—The tower is under the care of Flutgraben e.V. an artist-run studio complex and organization across the street.
—Each residency is a maximum of six weeks and a minimum of three weeks. The final length of the residency will be approved between The Watch and the resident prior to the start of the residency.
—Access to the tower is granted following the usage guidelines of the tower, and at the resident’s own risk, following the current covid-19 occupancy and hygiene guidelines.
—The watchtower has no toilet, no drinking water and is not wheelchair accessible. Each resident will have access to those facilities across the street at the Flutgraben building including common kitchen and bathroom, plus an introduction to resources such as WiFi and information needed during their residency.
—Research and outcomes of the Watch residency will be included as part of a collective public output in late 2021, which form will be developed by The Watch and the participating residents throughout 2020-2021. Process and research from the residencies may be included in the archives on the ground floor.
—The Watch meets regularly to share contents, thoughts, sketches, words, images, finished or non-finished works. The residents commit to participate in one research meeting during the period of their residency. This salon is a semi-private moment limited to 12 people for the inner space and more if held outside. The dates are communicated on our website and we also invite guests relevant to the thematic cycle and in dialogue with the resident. *During the pandemic's cycle this may happen virtually.
—The Watch works on a voluntary basis and receives no further public funding for the residency. A symbolic sum of 200 euro will be allocated to each residency. It is not possible to live in the watchtower during the residency. Therefore, we primarily encourage applications from the Berlin region. Research, travel and board costs offsite are understood to be carried by the invited resident. We kindly provide invitation letters to support application to further funding schemes.

Dieser Salon ist ein halbprivater Moment, begrenzt auf eine Zahl von 12 Personen innerhalb des Wachturms oder auch mehr, falls das Treffen draußen stattfinden kann. Während der Pandemie können und müssen die Treffen ggf. auch virtuell stattfinden.
Die Termine dieser Treffen werden auf unserer Webseite bekanntgegeben und wir laden auch weitere Gäste ein, deren Arbeit in Bezug auf das Thema der Recherche und den Dialog mit den Künstler*innen interessant sein könnte.

Es ist nicht möglich während der Residency im ehemaligen Wachturm zu wohnen. Aus diesem Grund wenden wir uns in erster Linie an Bewerber*innen, die in Berlin leben.
Forschung, Reisen sowie Unterkunft und Verpflegung werden von den Resident*innen selbst getragen. Wir unterstützen die Bewerbung für weitere Fördermöglichkeiten mit einer schriftlichen Einladung.

The Watch is currently Jean-Ulrick Désert, Franziska Koenig-Paratore, Dominique Hurth, Marcela Moraga, Irina Novarese and Jo Zahn. Coming from the fields of theatre, scenography, visual arts, writing, performance and curating, an interdisciplinary and collaborative practice is at the core of The Watch informed by feminist, queer and non-hegemonic strategies.
The Watch sind momentan Jean-Ulrick Désert, Franziska Koenig-Paratore, Dominique Hurth, Marcela Moraga, Irina Novarese und Jo Zahn. Wir haben Hintergründe in Theater, Bühnenbild, Bildender Kunst, Schreiben, Performance und Kuratorischen Projekten, als Kern unserer Arbeit als The Watch sehen wir interdisziplinäre und kollaborative Praxen mit einem starken Bezug zu feministischen, queeren und nicht hegemonialen Strategien.
