In 2020 The Watch has been awarded the Project Space Prize from the Berliner Senate. All recipients of the prize will be part of the Berliner Art Week during September 9th-13th 2020. In this framework, The Watch will present several outcomes of the dialogues hold with the past and current residents around the notion of “caretaking”. An archive of artistic production created in the tower since 1990 will also be opened to the public.
A talk bringing together several people who contributed to the tower for the past thirty years will take place on the 12th of September.

Register here for an individual visit to the tower (archives and exhibition): www.berlinartweek.de/en/reservation-the-watch/

Immediately following the fall of the Berlin Wall, songwriter Kalle Winkler and a group of associates occupied the watchtower, and established the “Museum of Forbidden Art” within it (das Museum der Verbotenen Kunst). Their occupation of the tower, and its subsequent use by various groups of artists, prevented the building from being demolished, unlike virtually every other Berlin Wall watchtower within the city limits. To mark the thirtieth anniversary of the tower’s first occupation, The Watch — in collaboration with raumlabor berlin — have installed a brand-new archive on the ground-floor, bringing together documents and artistic artefacts produced in the tower since 1990. During Berlin Art Week the archive will be open to visitors, and activated throughout the tower in a series of installations. Our 2020 artists-in-residence Melanie Jame Wolf and Max Brück will show excerpts of their work, and share the results of research conducted over the course of the thematic ‘caretaking’ cycle.
