(...) I find it somewhat surprising to find myself a care-taker of the watchtower. I use the term ‘care-taker’ loosely in relation to myself because I want to be careful not to claim an ownership or possession of the space, or even an insinuation that I am a good care-taker. Yet when I think about this building that I have grown to know in the last few years, and I think about the various human bodies that come into contact with it, I can only really propose that (with any regularity and endurance) it is the three of us who currently take care for this place, in the constellation of The Watch. There is a sense of being accidental care-takers, revealed to have this unexpected status almost as a default — to realise you are holding something and then to notice that the needs of this thing have grown, or become more transparent, or more urgent, and also that no other hands are doing this holding. Is it (ever going to be) possible to re-claim this place? Can the gaps of neglect and indifference on the part of the city be activated, so that we can use the inattention to propose our own ways to participate in or at this site? And then what does taking care mean — of the tower, of our own bodies, of the organising structures that coalesce as we come together in this space? (...)

The Watch consists of a group of artists and cultural producers that inhabits the former GDR watchtower on Schlesischer Busch (Berlin-Treptow) during the summer months, in the formats of residencies, semi-public events, screenings and talks. The former watchtower has a long tradition of cultural and artistic production ever since Reunification, yet, in recent years, the building has become a place for reflection rather than mere production: artists, writers, choreographers, and other thinkers have been invited to spend time within and around the tower to consider the building’s texture, its history, its future, as well as its present position within Berlin’s cultural and political landscape.
For every two-year cycle, The Watch works with one thematic topic. For 2020 and 2021 we are interested in initiating ongoing dialogues with the invited temporary inhabitants of the watchtower about notions and practices of caretaking. Questions of taking care, and what exactly to care about, are very present in nearly every decision we have to make as The Watch — especially due to our situation hosting an artist residency in a protected monument on a very low budget. These dialogues could be based directly on the situation of the artist spending time in this unique structure and having to find a way of dealing with both their own needs as well as the needs of the building. We are also equally interested in approaches that go beyond the actual situation of the watchtower, and that connect in a more abstract thematic level, using the tower as a site to think or as a studio space.
In 2020 The Watch is offering three residencies of six weeks duration each at the watchtower. We are looking for individuals and collectives who are interested in responding to this new cycle’s themes during three residency periods between May and September.

The Watch ist eine Gruppe von Künstler*innen und Kulturproduzent*innen, die den ehemaligen DDR-Grenzwachturm im Schlesischen Busch (Berlin Treptow) während der Sommermonate in der Form von Residencies, Veranstaltungen, Vorführungen und Gesprächen bespielt. Der frühere Wachturm blickt auf eine lange Tradition als Ort kultureller und künstlerischer Produktion seit der Wiedervereinigung zurück. In den letzten Jahren hat er sich aber von einem Ort der Produktion stärker zu einem Ort der Reflektion gewandelt: Künstler*innen, Autor*innen, Choreograph*innen und andere Denker*innen sind eingeladen, Zeit im Turm und seiner Umgebung zu verbringen und sich mit dem Gebäude, seiner Textur und Geschichte, seiner Zukunft sowie seiner gegenwärtigen Position innerhalb der kulturellen und politischen Landschaft Berlins zu beschäftigen.
Jeweils für den Zeitraum von zwei Jahren arbeitet The Watch zu einem übergreifenden Thema.
Im Zeitraum von 2020 bis 2021 möchten wir mit den eingeladenen Künstler*innen und kurzzeitigen Bewohner*innen des Wachturms in einen Dialog über Fragen und Konzepte des Sich-Kümmerns, Pflegens, Instandhaltens eintreten. Das englische care-taking verbindet diese verschiedenen Bedeutungsebenen in einem Begriff. Fragen des “Sorge tragens” (taking care) und worum sich zu kümmern wäre (to care about) sind permanent präsent im Rahmen der Organisation einer Artist Residency in einem denkmalgeschützen Gebäude mit minimalem Budget. Was könnten künstlerische Formen und Umgangsweisen sein, die mit der Situation umgehen, eine längere Zeit an diesem einzigartigen Ort zu verbringen und zu arbeiten und wie können die eingeladenen Künstler*innen es schaffen sowohl ihren eigenen Interessen und Bedürfnisse als auch der Bedürfnisse des Gebäudes gerecht zu werden? Gleichermaßen sind wir aber auch interessiert an Zugängen, die über die konkrete Situation des Grenzwachturms hinaus sich dem Thema des “care-taking” auf einer abstrakteren thematischen Ebene widmen und dafür den Wachturm als Denkort und Atelier verwenden möchten.
Für die Zeit von Mai bis September 2020 schreibt The Watch drei jeweils sechswöchige Residencies im Grenzwachturm aus. Wir sind auf der Suche nach Einzelpersonen oder Kollektiven, die daran interessiert sind auf unseren thematischen Schwerpunkt innerhalb ihres Aufenthalts im Wachturm einzugehen.

—The tower is under the care of Flutgraben e.V.
—Each residency is (maximum) 6 weeks long.
—Access to the tower is granted following the usage guidelines of the tower, and at the resident’s own risk.
—The tower has no toilet, no drinking water and is not wheelchair accessible. Each resident will get access to the nearby Flutgraben building including common kitchen and bathroom, plus an introduction to resources and information needed during their residency.
—Research and outcomes of the residency will be included as part of a collective public output in late 2021. The form of this will be developed by The Watch and the participating residents across 2020-2021.
—The Watch meets monthly to share contents, thoughts, sketches, words, images, finished or non-finished works. The participant of the residency commits to participate in this monthly research meeting during the period of their residency. This salon is a semi-private moment limited to 12 people for the inner space and more if held outside. The dates are communicated on our website and we also invite guests relevant to the thematic cycle and in dialogue with the resident.
—Within each residency, we would like to ask the participating resident to open the tower to the public (interested public, passer-by’s, tourists, etc.) one Saturday afternoon (14h-18h) during their stay. This date will be set in accordance with the resident and The Watch and communicated to the wider public on the watchtower’s door, website and The Watch newsletter.
—The Watch works on a voluntary basis and receives no further public funding for the residency. A symbolic budget of 200 euro will be allocated to each residency to cover possible material and production costs. It is also not possible to live in the watchtower during the residency. Thus we primarily encourage applications from Berlin-based producers.

—Jede Residency ist (maximal) 6 Wochen lang.
—Der Zugang zum Wachturm ist möglich auf der Grundlage der Nutzungsbedingungen und auf eigene Gefahr..
—Der Grenzwachturm verfügt weder über Toiletten noch fließendes Wasser, er ist leider nicht barrierefrei. Jede(r) Resident*in erhält aber Zugang zum nahegelegenen Atelierhaus Flutgraben mit der Möglichkeit der Benutzung der Toiletten und der Gemeinschaftsküche, sowie eine Einführung in sämtliche Strukturen und Ressourcen, die für den Aufenthalt benötigt werden bzw hilfreich sind.
—Die Forschung und Ergebnisse der Residency sollen Teil eines gemeinsamen öffentlichen Auftritts Ende 2021 sein. Dessen Form wird von The Watch im Verlauf der Residencies 2020 und 2021 zusammen mit allen teilnehmenden Künstler*innen entwickelt.
—The Watch trifft sich monatlich um Inhalte, Entwürfe, Worte, Bilder, fertige oder noch nicht abgeschlossene Arbeiten zu teilen. The Watch is currently Chris Gylee, Dominique Hurth and Jo Zahn. Coming from the fields of theatre, scenography, visual arts, writing, performance and curating, an interdisciplinary and collaborative practice is at the core of The Watch informed by feminist, queer and non-hegemonic strategies.
